Typical one-way transit is 5 to 8 hours depending on port gate clearance, ghat traffic and factory unloading slots. Night movement is common to avoid heavy-vehicle restrictions inside city limits.

20ft vs 40ft: choosing the right trailer

A 20ft container suits dense, heavy cargo such as machinery parts, metal coils and chemicals, where weight limits are reached before volume. A 40ft or 40ft High Cube is ideal for lighter, bulky consignments like auto components in packaging, furniture or consumer goods.

• 20ft: up to ~28 tonnes gross payload, easier factory access, lower toll cost.
• 40ft / HC: roughly double the volume, best for light-but-bulky cargo.
• Check factory gate width, turning radius and loading dock height before booking a 40ft.

Delays most often come from incomplete paperwork at the CFS. Share the Delivery Order, Bill of Entry, e-way bill and seal details with your transporter before the vehicle reaches the yard so the driver can enter the queue immediately.

Tips to avoid detention charges

Shipping lines charge detention once free days on the container expire. Planning the return leg is as important as the delivery.

• Book the trailer as soon as the DO is released, not after customs clearance.
• Confirm factory unloading manpower and slot timing in advance.
• Arrange empty container return to the nominated yard on the same trip where possible.
• Use a transporter with live tracking so your CHA can update the line in real time.
